A Comprehensive Neurological Assessment and Treatment Program for Seniors
 

Helping individuals with neurological conditions live as fully and independently as possible requires a team approach to care.  If you have difficulty with daily activities related to stroke, Parkinson's or orther neurological issues, The Spaulding Centers for Geriatric Neurology can help you improve function and quality of life with our comprehensive approach to diagnosis, managing symptoms and optimizing medications.  Our team of specialists will work with your primary care physician to develop an individualized treatment plan based upon an in-depth neurological analysis of your needs, capabilities and goals.

Neurologist David Lowell, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Spauding Cape Cod, is Program Director of The Spaulding Centers for Geriatric Neurology.  Board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Lowell has special interest in the functional and behavioral issues associated with stroke, brain injury and nerurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease.  He is also Director of the Parkinson's Center for Comprehensive Care.   The evaluation includes a screening of balance, gait and other skills conducted by a physical therapist specializing in neuro-rehabilitation. 

For Seniors with Known or Suspected:

  • Parkinson's Disease (PD) or other Movement Disorders
  • Stroke (ischemic, hemorrhagic, subarachnoid) -- recent or in the past
  • Balance Disorders related to brain and spinal cord conditions
  • Memory and other cognitive disorders, such as Alzheimer's, Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DBL), Multi-infarct Dementia
  • Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)
  • Primary or Metastic Brain Tumors

Initial Assessment Includes:

  • Neurological evaluation and detailed examination by a board-certified neurologist specializing in neuro-rehabilitation
  • Review of information from care partners, family members, your referring physician, community resources and others involved in your medical care
  • Cognition and memory assessment
  • Balance and gait screenings by a physical therapists specializing in neuro-rehabilitation
  • Medication review and recommendations

Follow-up Care includes:

  • Assessment of new and evolving issues, including response to medical and non-medical interventions
  • Patient, family and caregive education
  • Ongoing communication with your doctors and other members of your treatment team

Outpatient Services May Include:

  • Physiatry (rehabilitation physician) evaluation and treatment, including spasticity management
  • Physical, occupational and speech therapies including Lee Silverman Voice Treatment
  • Cognitive rehabilitation
  • Swallowing evaluation, including modified barium swallow
  • Advanced neuro-rehabilitation
  • Fall prevention
  • Driver assessment and rehabilitation, audiology evaluation and hearing aids, low vision treatments
  • Orthotic and prosthetic clinics
  • Wheelchair assessment, including customized designs and fittings
  • Wellness programs and individualized home exercise programs
  • Individual and couples therapy; positive psychology group therapy with a health psychologist
  • Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program

Wednesdays: Spaulding Outpatient Center Sandwich
Fridays: Spaulding Outpatient Center Orleans
