Parkinson's Positive Psychology Program

SCC's Parkinson's Positive Psychology Program is designed to facilitate greater understanding, overall adjustment and quality of life for persons with Parkinson's Disease (PD) and their care-partners.  The program has two primary goals:

  • To educate participants about the common psychological symptoms of Parkinson's
  • To teach lifestyle approaches that enhance well-being even in the face of illness

John S. Allen, PhD, SCC Health Psychologist, has created an innovative program for persons with Parkinson's Disease and their care-partners based on the emerging field of positive psychology.   Studies have shown that the principles of positive psychology can increase functional performance, reduce stress and depression, and enhance overall quality of life for the general population.  Dr. Allen has adapted these principles to address specific issues related to living with Parkinson's disease.

Led by Dr. Allen at SCC-Sandwich, each 8-week program includes:

  • 1-hour group session weekly
  • Understanding of the common psychological aspects of PD
  • Five key positive psychology strategies for PD
  • How to increase quality of life in the face of PD challenges

NOTE: An initial evaluation is required for patients as well as care-partners.  Programs are covered by Medicare and most other insurances.
